Horse Grooming Tips

People who own horses classify the hours spent grooming their beloved equine animals, as time well spent, as it’s that effort which makes them look beautiful and presentable while promoting relaxation to both the horse and owner.

To make this job a little bit easier; every horse owner accumulates a bag of tips and tricks over time, which helps in the grooming of their horses.

Being in the equine industry for many years, LV Performance has learned several horse grooming tips:

Good Nutrition

One of the the main reasons behind your horses glistening coat actually comes from healthy diet. A good diet is very important in this respect, which means that you, as the owner, should provide your horse with good quality grade feed, equine supplements (if necessary), and a regular de-worming. Following this is a good place to start, if you wish your horse to have a truly healthy coat.

Coconut Oil

Everyone knows the moisturizing benefits of coconut oil for the skin and hair, but did you know that you can effectively manage your horse’s tail and mane with coconut oil as well? Regular applications of the uber moisturizer help prevent breakage of the hair and un-tangle knots easily. One more benefit of coconut oil is its antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Vinegar and Water Solution

Plain water when mixed with vinegar has the ability to break down clay. This fact is used by many horse-owners when it comes to the basic grooming of their horses. Before leading the animal for their daily bath, you can break down the dirt matted on the coat with the help of 1 part water and 1 part vinegar solution that can be sprayed over the horse before bathing.

Vitamin E Oil

This vitamin possesses healing properties and can be commonly found in our human skincare products, including the creams and lotions that are used to treat burns, scars, and stretch marks. This is one reason why many horse owners use vitamin E oil on their horses as well, especially over bald patches and scratches.

Microfiber Cloths

In many cases, microfiber cloths are a horse owner’s biggest friend and secret weapon, as a good quality microfiber cloth can be used to bring an extra sheen to your horse's coat. In addition to this, microfiber cloths are very convenient to use for the horse owner, as they are washable and reusable.

Careful With That Tail

The tail and mane can become two of the most beautiful aspects of a horse; therefore owners should take extra care when it comes to preserving the health and length of their horse’s hair. This is done by an old-school grooming technique known as finger-combing. To make this easier, you can also purchase a soft bristled brush for your horse which saves times and treats your horse to a nice massage!

Time and “Elbow Grease”

When it comes to the finer details, equine grooming proves to be a good experience for both horse and owner. Still, there are times when the owner will be hard pressed for time and not able to provide thorough attention to his beloved horse. This is why, taking just 10-15 minutes each and every day to groom your horse more than makes up for the day.
