Horse Tail Care Tips

Your majestic horse galloping through the meadows is no doubt a graceful sight. But ever wonder that its tail is an integral part to care for when it comes to grooming and is often just shampooed?

That’s not all it requires, following the beautiful mane the tail requires proper care and trim to be dense and beautiful. Both, the dock and skirt of the tail need nourishment and care to give your horse an overall groomed healthy look as its movement and health tells about the equine’s physical condition.

Healthy Body Equals Healthy hair

You must have heard about a healthy body producing healthy hair among humans, the same theory applies to horses. A healthy internal system of your horse would corroborate a healthy mane and tail glowing with natural oils.

Use Grooming Tools for Mane and Tail

Using a thin toothed comb or brush would result in hair breakage and no tangle would budge. A wide toothed comb designed for horse tail and mane helps detangle the knots and give a thorough brush. However, the frequency of brushing a horse tail should be less. Brushing it daily would result in pulling out more strands and the tail would start to look thinner by days.

Brush the Dock

In order to stimulate hair growth, brush the dock of your horse’ tail with a dandy brush to increase the blood flow (as happens in human scalp) and also to remove dirt and debris from the dock which may cause an itch. If your horse is scratching its dock, check out for the reason, as parasites or bugs may be the cause and it might be the time for de-worming as well.

Moisturized and Cleaned Tail

The best way to guarantee a healthy mane and tail is to regularly clean and moisturize it to avoid getting dried and tangled. After shampooing your horse, massage it with a moisturizer starting from the dock of your horse’s tail down towards the skirt and finish it by the edges. The tail could be given a bubble bath by washing it in a bucket full of bubble solution and water and rinsing it off easily.

Don’t Wrap the Top

Wrapping the top of the horse’s tail is often difficult and an effort to do so results in an extra tight wrap around the dock. This often causes the horse to rub it off and gets them irritated. If wrapped too tight it also curtails the circulation of blood. A wrapped tail if stuck in fence or bushes while your horse goes for a stroll may result in great damage to its hair.

Trim the Sides not Pluck

In order to have a neat appearance of the tail, many people cut it down in a rough manner or pull out hair strands, just don’t do it. Neatly trim the sides and it is advisable to hire a horse grooming professional for the task to ensure a fine cut for and a beautiful tail for your equine friend.

The hair of the horse tail is to be properly shampooed and detangled regularly. Also, take time out to hand pick any straws or debris and hand comb your horse’s tail not only to clean it but also to bond with your horse.
